DADS READ: "Very Little Cinderella" by Teresa Heapy and Sue Heap

JER: “Very Little Cinderella” by Teresa Heapy and Sue Heap is a refreshing take on a problematic fairy tale. I’m not sure if y’all are the same, but I am constantly having to edit Classic fairy tales on the fly. “The prince freed Snow White from her glass case and woke her with a kiss” is edited to “A nice person noticed that Snow White was having some difficulty waking and gently roused her. They were great friends ever after”. Etcetera.

My 8-year-old has started noticing how often I am editing traditional fairytales for my 4-year-old since she can read, and she commented that “this is a good book, because you don’t have to edit this one”.

I also love how it celebrates how self assured children are: they are more than happy to wear the same outfit for every occasion. I like how it highlights how problematic their desire to “help” can be: “cleaning all done. Now I have cookie”

But most of all, I love that I don’t have to pretend that the Princess’s life is magically all better when a Prince shows up: if you lose your “lello boot” a friend might kindly bring it back and have a play date with you.
